I wanted to let everyone know about my upcoming Saturday classes in Durham. This session, in Tribal CORE, we're going to be working on group formations and transitions for Tribal Group Improv. In Fusion FLOW, we'll be learning a tribal fusion drum solo style choreography. I will also be offering a new class for intermediate and advanced students, MEGA Challenge. Read on for details!

GENERAL CLASS INFO

The Spring 2009 CORE/FLOW classes will occur on May 2, May 9, May 23, May 30, June 6 and June 27. Each class is 1 hour 20 minutes in length. Tribal CORE class starts at 10 AM and Fusion FLOW class starts at 11:40.
Classes are held on Saturdays at the Triangle Dance Studio (upstairs) in Durham, NC. Directions to the studio are available on the TDS website at http://www.triangledancestudio.com .

Payment for Tribal CORE and Fusion FLOW is very flexible. Each class is $14 if you pay for it a la carte. Alternatively, you can take both CORE and FLOW in a day for $24, or buy a 6-class pass card for $60. Pass cards can be used for both CORE and FLOW classes and do not expire. You do not need to preregister for CORE/FLOW classes, and drop-ins are always welcome in either class.

I can accept payments in cash or check only.

MORE ABOUT EACH CLASS

Tribal CORE - All Levels Welcome - 10AM-11:20AM

This class is an exploration of Tribal bellydance technique focusing on isolations, posture, kinesthetic awareness, and the biomechanics of movement. Each class will begin with a centering warmup, focus on two to three moves from the American Tribal Style (ATS) or Tribal Group Improv movement vocabularies, and conclude with some group improv.
The format of this class allows for lots of individual feedback and is great for both complete beginners and continuing students who want advice on how to tweak their tribal improv to perfection.
In our Spring 2009 session, we will be focusing on transitions and formations for tribal improv with zils (or sagat, or finger cymbals). Some zils will be available to borrow, but students are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to buy their own zils in order to practice at home. (Don't worry, the class will still be drop-in friendly.)

Fusion FLOW - Multilevel Class for Continuing Students - 11:40AM-1PM

This class is an exploration of bellydance performance focusing on transitions, stylization, grace, fluidity and emotion. In our Spring 2009 session, we'll be learning a Tribal Fusion "drum solo style" choreography that will help dancers refine several different skills, including dancing to "odd" rhythms, rhythm recognition, percussive isolations, shimmies, and (optional) layering! This class is recommended for students with some previous experience in a bellydance class, but all students are welcome.

NEW! MEGA Challenge - Seminar Class for Intermediate and Advanced Students - 1:30-2:50PM
This class is full. If you'd like to be added to a waitlist, please email me at skbeaman (at) gmail (dot) com.
This new session-based class for experienced dancers is limited to a maximum of ten participants. The class will be challenging but fun with a strong emphasis on clarifying technique and presentation. Every class will be videotaped and the tape posted to a private Youtube channel so that students can review class content and monitor their own progress. The class will include an optional written "homework" component designed to help students zero in on their goals and to allow me to give people the best feedback and suggestions I can.
Due to the nature of the class, I can't allow drop-ins for MEGA.

The Mezmer Society comes to Durham! April 25!

Greetings, lovely dancers!

Blue Moon Dance Company is sponsoring the Mezmer Society in a daylong
seminar on April 25, 2009, and we would love it if you would join us!

The Mezmer Society is a collaboration between Onca O'Leary (Director of
Baraka Mundi Live Music & Dance Ensemble, Bandit Queen A director, event
producer, and full-throttle entertainer) and Balkan accordionist August
Hoerr and their musical ensemble. The Society presents a delicious melange of Eastern European music, powerful bellydance technique, goodwill, bad
behavior, and sultry oddements. The year 2008 saw The Mezmer Society as
featured instructors at TribalCon & Southern Fried Tribal in
Atlanta, TribalFest in California, Tribal Revolution in Chicago and
TribOriginal in North Carolina. The Mezmer Society is fully committed to
spreading the aesthetic of hafla joy as quickly and loudly as possible!

Both workshops and the show will be held at The Solution Center, in
Brighton Hall, 1101 Slater Road, Durham, NC.

9:30 AM: Doors open for registration and shopping

10:00 AM – Noon: It's Magic: Exploring the Synergy between Live Music and
Dance
Live music can take your performance to a new strata of stage
presence, power, and community pleasure. Musicians love dancers that can
clearly describe what they need, and dancers love musicians that honor
those needs while making them look wonderful. This
high-spirited, interactive workshop addresses etiquette, effective
communication onstage and off, and tips on how to successfully
collaborate while being aware of everyone's interests. These fun
exercises in creating strong entrances, transitioning tempos, and
ending fabulously will all be accompanied by the (strains, wheezes, and
mellifluous sounds of the) Accordion. A fantastic workshop for both
musicians and dancers!

Noon - 1:00 PM: Lunch/shopping break

1:00- 4:00 PM: Crackerjack Cane Combos
It's all how you handle the big stick. Cane, or 'Raks Assaya', is a
traditional woman's dance art that offers tremendous creative
expression to Fusion, Burlesque, and Vaudeville artists. Building on the
bellydance vocabulary, we drill sustainable cane technique and explore
combos with attitude. Great for developing both troupe
precision and the theatrical face of fusion. A few canes will be
available to borrow on a first-come, first-served basis, and there will be
some canes for sale as well. Workshop space is limited so
don't delay in signing up for the foxy and folkloric fun!

8:00 PM: Evening performance begins. (Doors open at 7:30 PM.) Light
refreshments will be served; no alcohol or unauthorized videotaping
permitted.
There will be a DVD of the performance available for purchase. Sign up for
the DVD now or at the door. No DVD orders will be taken after the event.

Blue Moon has new sessions of Basic Level 1 and Essentials of Tribal Belly Dance classes starting next week, and we would love for you to join us! All classes are held at Namaste Yoga Center, 1003 High House Road, #203 in Cary. Our classes frequently sell out before they start so sign up soon if you want to participate. And don't forget: as a returning Blue Moon student, you get 10% off your pre-paid session fee (that comes to $58.50 for a 5 week session) and if you bring a friend, you each receive $5 off the session fee as well!

With two instructors and multiple options for executing moves, combinations, participating in lead/follow and zilling, this is sure to be a fun and exciting way to learn tribal style belly dance! Zils and hip scarves are available to borrow or purchase; students should wear comfortable clothing, and are encouraged to wear light socks, dance shoes or bare feet during class. Ages 14 and up.

Blue Moon Dance Company's Show Tunes Hafla is just around the corner, and it is going to be fantastic! Tickets are selling fast so don't delay in sending in your registration and payment if you want to attend. Here are the details:

Date: Saturday, January 24
Time: Doors open at 7:00 PM
Place: The Solution Center, Brighton Hall, 1101 Slater Road, Durham (RTP)

Fee: $7 for performers only; $10 for those 14 and older; $5 for ages 5-14; children under the age of 5 are free.

We have had 2 performers drop out so we do have space for 2 more performers that evening. Performance slots will be limited to one per dancer whether as a soloist or member of a troupe so that we can accommodate as many performers as possible. All performances are limited to 5 minutes; no strewn objects, live animals or open flames permitted. Please call Nandana at 919-367-0203 with any questions.

Blue Moon is happy to announce that they will be offering copies of the Show Tunes Hafla on DVD! They are available for pre-order and there will be an order form available the night of the hafla as well. These performance DVDs are $15 per copy.

Blue Moon is happy to announce that starting Tuesday, October 21, we will be teaching daytime classes at Triangle Pilates/Cary Yoga Center in Cary. Here are the details:

Blue Moon announces their 3rd Annual Benefit Workshop and Show

Blue Moon Dance Company is proud to announce that we will be presenting our third annual
Benefit Workshop and Show on SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 2008!

This year's proceeds will be going to support the Food Bank of Eastern and Central North Carolina.

We will gratefully accept any volunteers who would like to help during set-up, serving, and/or clean-up of the event as well as any donations for door prizes and/or refreshments that evening. If you are interested in volunteering or donating, just drop us a line at mail@bluemoonbellydance.com. Please help us make this annual event as successful as possible! Thanks so much in advance.

Here are the details:

PLACE: Both events will be held at The Solution Center, Brighton Hall, 1101 Slater Road, Durham.

TIMES: 12:00 PM: Doors open for workshop registration

12:30 - 4:00 PM: PROPS CHOREOGRAPHY WORKSHOP:
Have a prop that you have been dying to put to good use? Want to expand your choreography repertoire with something new and exciting? Then this is the workshop for you! Bring your own prop; a very limited number of props will be available to borrow on a first-come, first-served basis. Props can include swords, pots, baskets, bowls, pitchers- if you can balance it, you can use it! Space for this workshop will be limited so don't delay in sending in your registration if you are interested in attending. We will no longer accept any registrations once we have reached capacity. Suitable for all levels. Bring water. Ages 14 and up.

All workshop attendees are invited to perform this choreography at that evening's benefit show!

FEE: $35. No refunds unless event is cancelled.

8:00 - 10:00 PM: BENEFIT SHOW.
Doors open at promptly at 7:30 PM. (Please note that no one other than those helping with set-up will be admitted prior to 7:30 PM.)

All members of our bellydance community are invited to attend this gala show which will feature a performance of the workshop choreography as well as the wonderful talents of many of our local performers. Light refreshments will be served. No alcohol permitted on the premises. No unauthorized videotaping will be permitted. Thank you for your cooperation regarding this. Once we have sold out we will no longer accept registrations for this event, so don't delay in registering if you want to attend!

FEE:$7 for performers only; $10 for those 14 and older; $5 for ages 5-14; children under the age of 5 are free. (Children attending must be under their parents'/guardians' personal supervision at all times. Blue Moon

As of today, 7/9/08, Blue Moon Dance Company's annual spooktacular event, HAFLAWEEN is SOLD OUT!!! And in record time! Now that we have reached capacity, we will no longer accept any registrations/payments.

All performance slots are also taken, but we are starting a wait list for anyone who is already registered and now wants to perform just in case a slot opens up.

Gathering People for Exploring Dance/Movement/Performance

A mirth of local players and performers is forming. The word forming is being used loosely; we’re not going on the road or anything(at least not yet). I want to help gather some people with the intent of exploring the boundaries of what we can do together-performance and creativity wise. You do not (repeat DO NOT) need to have an existing skill which falls into any of the following categories. Personally I have next to no experience in any of this stuff. A desire and willingness to learn, play, and strive is much more important than expertise.

Seeking people(or others) who want to explore dance(all kinds), martial arts, street theatre, butoh, gymnastics, contortion, drumming, yoga, kubuki, busking, stilt walking, sphere play, sound creation, break dancing, cabaret, acrobatics, and making costumes and all sorts of other stuff.

I don’t have a rigid idea or vision of what this will be. I am not the leader but I am the force acting as a catalyst to get this going. Maybe we can get together when we can, teach each other different forms, and see what happens.

I would like to incorporate capoeira, tai chi, fire staff, myth remembering, and swelling circus music into a 10 minute piece, call it an intro, and then set in on an Arabic flute based mesmerizing dance improve, berimbau beat backed, cartwheel freakout, followed by macabre mask adorned, kali striking, throat singing and chanting monkey circle parade in the dust finale. If this sort of thing sounds appealing please get in touch.

I am in Carrboro so it would be great to collaborate with people in the nearby vicinity but anyone who is interested is welcome to get in touch.

Blue Moon Dance Company's upcoming Tassel Belts and More Costuming workshop to be held on July 26 is SOLD OUT! NEWSFLASH: HAFLAWEEN IS MOVING to Saturday, October 25!!

This year's event will be a co-production with the incomparable musicical group, Lost Nomads! Please also note that Haflaween is moving to The Solution Center, Brighton Hall, 1101 Slater Road, Durham.

Doors open at 7:00 PM; performances start at 7:30 PM.

Come celebrate the 5th Annual Haflaween with us! Performances and Halloween themed attire are encouraged but not required. Musicians are most welcome! Triangle belly dance teachers: please feel free to bring your students. All members of the Triangle belly dance community are welcome. Light refreshments will be served. No alcohol permitted on the premises. No unauthorized videotaping will be permitted. Thank you for your cooperation regarding this.

Fee:$7 for performers only;$10 for those 14 and older; $5 for ages 5-14; children under the age of 5 are free. (Children attending must be under their parents'/guardians' personal supervision at all times. Blue Moon does not have provisions for montoring children.) No refunds given unless event is cancelled.

Gina of Atlanta Workshop!

Hello Dancers!

This past Saturday, I had the sincere honor and pleasure of hosting
Gina of Atlanta here in eastern North Carolina. This was my very first
event and I am so proud to say it was a HUGE SUCCESS!!!

I just wanted to thank all the wonderful ladies from the local and
surrounding areas that attend this workshop and made it possible. A
big thanks to Nadira (Christie Hill) from Greenville for coming and
bringing all of her fabulous ladies with her, Susan Sutton and Sharon
Carlton from Wilson, and LuAnn Hooper from Hampstead. And of course,
all of my dedicated students that came out and supported this event.

I would also like to send out another big thank you to all the awesome
vendors that came and sold their wonderful wares. We had Sashi of Blue
Fusion Tribal, the "Llama Mamas" Holly and Nicole with Eye Kandy,
Grand Bazaar of Wilmington and our very own Jennifer Avila with
"Beautiful Life" jewelry. The shopping was amazing and I know everyone
was really happy with all their new goodies!

Gina was amazing and I couldn't have chosen a better person to host a
workshop with, she was a dream! I know we have all learned a lot and
have been inspired by her instruction, sheer talent and positive and
encouraging personality, Gina Raqs!!!

I am looking forward to being apart of many more events here on the
coast, and this workshop was the perfect way to kick-start the unity
of bellydance here in eastern North Carolina!!! Thank you again to
everyone that made this possible!

Tribal Costuming & Construction: Tassels, Yarn Fringe, Belt Basics and More!

DATE: Saturday, July 26

TIME: 2:00 - 5:00 PM

PLACE: 104 Southwold Drive, Cary, NC

Want to know exactly how to make those gorgeous tassels, fierce fringe belts, and beautiful but sturdy 1- and 2-panel belt bases? Then this is the workshop for you! You will receive hands-on instruction as well as tips on where to purchase all the materials and embellishments to make your very own tribal belt. Topics will also include making maximum use of your costuming dollar, attaching mirror belts, kuchi jewelry, beads, and other items; how to replace mirrors, and as a bonus, the how-tos behind creating fantastic and functional cover-ups. Blue Moon will provide the makings for tassels; participants must bring a VHS tape case for the construction section. Feel free to bring your own ornamentation if you like.

Participants MUST PRE-REGISTER for this workshop so that we have enough supplies on hand. We will not accept any registrations after July 22. There are only 8 slots available in total; a minimum of 5 registrants is required in order to run this workshop. If there is enough demand for this workshop, we will encore it at a later date. OUR SUMMER/EARLY FALL CLASS SCHEDULE is now available!

BLUE MOON offers tribal belly dance classes at Namaste Yoga Center, 1003 High House Road, #203 in Cary on Monday and Wednesday evenings.

Basic Level 1: Mondays, 8:40 - 9:40 PM

June 2 - June 30
July 14 - August 11
August 25 - September 29 (N.B.: No class on August 1)

Basic Level 1 class is suitable for all levels of ability - no previous dance experience is required. These classes are presented in a Tribal Fusion Style format which teaches group improvisation, how to "lead and follow" (a style that is at the heart of tribal style dance), chorus formations, cues and transitions, how to play zils (finger cymbals) and elements of basic choreography. Dance posture, arm positioning, safe ways to warm up and cool down, tips for performing, and most of all, how to have fun and enjoy yourself while learning this beautiful art form will all be included in these classes. A new series of moves is taught during each level of each session. Zils and hip scarves are available to borrow or purchase; students should wear comfortable clothing, and are encouraged to wear light socks, dance shoes or bare feet during class. Ages 14 and up. A minimum of 5 pre-paid students is required in order to run the class. Drop-ins are welcome. Class size is limited, however, so sign up early!

Essentials of Tribal Belly Dance: Wednesdays, 8:00-9:15 PM

Blue Moon announces Haflaween 2008 details!

Saturday,October 24, 2008: Haflaween!! This year's event will be a co-production with Yalla Dance Guild, and will be held at the Cary VFW Post 7383, 522 Reedy Creek Road, Cary, NC. Doors open at 7:00 PM; performances start at 8:00 PM.

As always, performances and Halloween themed attire are encouraged but not required. Musicians are most welcome! Triangle belly dance teachers: please feel free to bring your students. Just a quick reminder that the early bird discount for Blue Moon Dance Company's Levels and Floorwork Technique Intensive to be held on Saturday, March 29, 2008, will end on March 14.

This intensive will be held at the Academy for the Performing Arts, 115 Commerce Street, Apex, NC from 10:00 AM - Noon . The focus of the workshop will be on teaching proper technique when doing those impressive level changes and floorwork moves that everyone loves to watch. We will cover form, proper posture, flexibility exercises, and moves and combinations that are sure to dazzle your audience members! Bring water and wear knee pads. You will learn some fantastic new moves and combinations as well as have the opportunity to develop and improve your basic bellydance technique. While this choreography is suitable for beginner students, options for more advanced moves and combinations will be taught during the Essentials of Tribal Belly Dance class for those who wish to challenge themselves a bit more. And best of all, those who attend this class will be invited to perform the choreography at an upcoming student hafla!

These classes are filling up quickly so don't delay if you wish to join us. Drop-ins are welcome, but please be advised that because this is a choreogrpahy, the instructors may not be able to catch you up if you only attend a few of the classes. Blue Moon Dance Company is starting a new session of classes next week:

Basic Level 1, Mondays, 8:40 -9:40PM, January 14 - February 11

Essentials of Tribal Belly Dance, Wednesdays, 8:00 - 9:15 PM, January 16 - February 13

All classes are held at Namaste Yoga Center, 1003 High House Road, #203, Cary.
A minimum of 5 pre-paid students is required in order to run the classes, but they are filling up quickly so don't delay if you wish to join us. Once we have enough students to make the class a go, drop-ins will also be welcome. Please note that the Essentials of Tribal Belly Dance class sold out last session, and once we are at capacity we will no longer take registrations for that class.

Also, remember that all returning Blue Moon students receive 10% off their pre-paid session fee. And if you bring a friend to class, you will each receive an additional $5 off the session fee!

Important class update: The current session of Essentials of Tribal Belly Dance held on Wednesday evenings at Namaste Yoga Center is FULL. We can't accept any more students for this class at this time, but we are starting new sessions of it in January, 2008. Basic Level 1, Mondays, 8:40 - 9:40 PM:

Basic Level 1 class is suitable for all levels of ability - no previous dance experience is required. These classes are presented in a Tribal Fusion Style format which teaches group improvisation, how to "lead and follow"(a style that is at the heart of tribal style dance), chorus formations, cues and transitions, how to play zils (finger cymbals) and elements of basic choreography. Dance posture, arm positioning, safe ways to warm up and cool down, tips for performing, and most of all, how to have fun and enjoy yourself while learning this beautiful art form will all be included in these classes. A new series of moves is taught during each level of each session. Zils and hip scarves are available to borrow or purchase; students should wear comfortable clothing, and are encouraged to wear light socks, dance shoes or bare feet during class. Ages 14 and up. Just a quick reminder that this coming Saturday, December 1, 2007, Blue Moon Dance Company will present a benefit workshop and show, all proceeds from which will go to Mercy Corps' efforts to aid women and children in the war-ravaged region of Darfur. We will be teaching an original skirt choreography to music dedicated to Sudanese women, so put on your big skirt and join us in learning a beautiful new performance piece while supporting a wonderful cause. All workshop participants are invited to perform the choreography at that evening's benefit show which will also feature performances by many members of our dance community. The line-up is phenomenal so you won't want to miss it! There will be live music, open dancing, light refreshments and fablulous door prizes as well.

The performer line-up for Blue Moon's Darfur benefit show on December 1 is full! We have many wonderful local and regional performers participating in the show so it is sure to be the hottest ticket in town that day. We are taking names for a wait list just in case performer slots open up, so if you would still like to participate, please send us your name and we will fill you in as space becomes available. Thank you so much to all the performers who are participating in the show; you are helping to make this event a true success!

In the meantime, there are still spaces available in the skirt workshop, but it is filling fast so don't delay in sending in your regsitration if you would like to come. Also, there are still seats for that evening's show so come on out- you will see some fantastic performances, be eligible for door prizes, have the chance to dance to live music, and help support a great cause all at the same time!

As you know, Blue Moon is sponsoring a benefit workshop and show on Dec. 1, all proceeds from which are going to women and children in Darfur. In order for this event to run smoothly, we are asking for volunteers to help with such duties as registration, set-up, refreshment servers, running the video camera, etc. If you can spare even 1 hour of your time that day to help us out, we would truly be appreciative. And if you know of anyone who would be willing to donate door prizes, refreshments, paper goods, services such as videography or would be willing to purchase advertising space in our program please let us know. Upcoming Classes with Sara in Durham - Saturday Mornings

Don't sleep in or watch cartoons-- come out to the Triangle Dance Studio in Durham and learn some cool bellydance moves and combinations on Saturday mornings with me, Sara!

My classes are structured a little differently than most. There is no "beginner", "intermediate" or "advanced" level. Both classes are rigorous and challenging, and are geared towards students who have a serious interest in exploring bellydance as an artform. Please read the descriptions carefully to determine which classes would be a good fit for you.

CORE: (10AM-11:20AM) This class is an exploration of bellydance technique focusing on isolations, posture, kinesthetic awareness, and the biomechanics of movement. Each class will begin with a centering warmup, focus on two to three moves and isolations from the ATS-inspired/Tribal/Folkloric movement vocabulary, and conclude with some group improv.
CORE is the right class for you if...
...you have never taken a bellydance class before
...you can only take classes intermittently (there are no class sessions)
...you want to focus on movement technique
...you want to learn about specific moves (feel free to suggest some either by email or at the beginning of any class)

FLOW: (11:40AM-1PM) This class is an exploration of bellydance performance focusing on transitions, stylization, grace, fluidity and emotion. Flow classes come in 5 to 7 week sessions and students are encouraged to attend as many of those weeks as possible in order to keep up with the curriculum. These classes introduce combinations for choreography and improv that emphasize musicality. Some sessions will focus on special topics (such as a specific style or skill), while others will be combos-into-choreography.
FLOW is the right class for you if...
...you are already familiar with some basic bellydance moves
...you are new to bellydance but want a mental challenge
...you would want to learn and/or perform a choreography with other students
...you would prefer a class with a set curriculum which builds on each previous week of instruction

Each class is 1 hour and 20 minutes in length. The fees are $14 for one class, $24 for both classes in a day, or $60 for a 6-class pass card. (I will keep your pass card and give you a copy for your own reference, but you won't have to keep track of it yourself, so you won't have to worry about losing your credit. Pass cards can be used for either class and do not expire.)

If financial concerns are keeping you from taking a class, please send me an email (skbeaman@yahoo.com). It may be possible that we could set up a fair barter system or some type of work-study arrangement.

You can RSVP for a class or class session by emailing me at skbeaman@yahoo.com. Please include the name of the class you would like to RSVP for and the date in the subject line (example: Flow Jan 1). In the body of your email, please provide me with your name and let me know whether you would like to be added to my mailing list or not. You can also feel free to tell me about your dance background or introduce yourself in any way you would like in the email. I love to know something about my students beyond just faces and names.

You do not need to prepay, or, for that matter, preregister for classes. Space is not a huge consideration. The RSVP is a courtesy to me to let me know how many students to expect in each class.

Please come to class prepared to pay by check or cash if you have not previously purchased a class pass. I can not take credit cards.

I reserve the right to cancel classes or class sessions at any time for any reason. In the event of a cancellation I will make all reasonable attempts to contact any students the change would potentially affect, in addition to posting all changes both on my website and on my blog. Because there is no prepayment system, no refunds will be given in the event of a cancellation.

Greetings!

As you may already have heard, Blue Moon Dance Company is raffling a ticket to see the BellyDance SuperStars when they come to Raleigh on October 27, 2007. We have been researching various charities to which to donate the proceeds from the raffle, and we believe we have found the perfect one. One of our Basic Level 1 students, Laura Snyder, DVM will be running in the San Francisco Nike Women’s Half Marathon on October 21 as a member of Team in Training to benefit the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. Laura, who is currently starting her third year of clinical pathology residency at North Carolina State University veterinary school, is running not only to raise awareness regarding the prevalence of blood cancers in humans, but also to increase awareness of the same diseases in animals.

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is dedicated to cure blood cancers and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Since 1949, the Society has raised more than $700 million to research and advance the knowledge of blood cancers and ultimately cure these diseases. Through Team in Training, the society offers the support and encouragement to facilitate people like Laura to become runners for a cure. Blue Moon truly applauds what Laura is doing to help the human and animal community, and therefore is donating all of the proceeds from the raffle of this ticket to her efforts. So by participating in the raffle, you not only take a chance on seeing one of the most entertaining events of the season, but you also will be participating in helping the effort to find a cure for blood cancers as well. Shimmy Intensive - Thanks!!

Thanks for another great workshop. I have to tell you that just hearing Sarah say that the back muscles hold up the shoulders really helped me out a lot. I can't believe this was news to me, but it was. I have found that it is easier to hold my shoulders back since I am focusing on my back muscles to do it. Amazing! Nandana gave me an excellent tip as well, for gaining control of the upper body shimmy - standing facing the wall, with hands on the wall. Thanks again to all 3 of you guys! See you in Aug :-))

Blue Moon announces an important date change, new workshops and updates on events

Blue Moon has a flurry of announcements including a critical date change, new workshops and intensives, and our upcoming class schedules that we would like to share with you.

HAFLAWEEN IS MOVING!! After hearing much wailing and gnashing of teeth because Haflaween was going to be held the same day as the Belly Dance Super Stars performance here in Raleigh, we have decided to change the date for Haflaween. It will now be held on SATURDAY, OCTOBER 20. (We even tried to persuade them to change their appearance date, but to no avail.) We hope this doesn't cause an issue for too many folks, but we want our bellydance community to be able to experience both events if they can. So mark your calendars accordingly, and be prepared for the best Haflaween ever! More details coming soon!

THERE ARE STILL A FEW SPOTS LEFT FOR OUR SHIMMY TECHNIQUE INTENSIVE ON JULY 21, but we are almost sold out so don't delay in sending in your registration if you want to take your shimmies to the next level!

Blue Moon presents another in its series of belly dance technique intensives, this time focusing on mastering the art of playing zils. Zil patterns, sounds, rhythms, drills and playing techniques will be included. The techniques taught in this intensive are applicable to both solo and group work.

Saturday, September 29: Back by popular demand: EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT DANCING WITH SWORDS!, 12:15 - 2:15, Academy for the Performing Arts, 115 Commerce Street, Apex, NC.

So many more people wanted to take this sold- out workshop than we could accommodate in June that we decided to run it again!

This workshop will focus on such topics as purchasing swords, presentation, balancing, performance tips and tricks, venue needs, music style and suggestions, turning, moving and dancing with a sword. No prior experience with swords is necessary for this workshop. Bring your own sword; a very limited number of swords will be available to borrow on a first-come, first-served basis

Poll- anyone interested in daytime classes in the RTP area?

Unfortunately, I have lost the space in which I held my Thursday classes in Chapel Hill :-( I do, however, have the opportunity to start another class in the RTP area on Thursdays at noon, but need to gauge whether enough people would be interested in attending this class before I can commit to renting the space. So is there anyone who would be interested in a lunchtime class on Thursdays? Or do you know someone who might be interested in coming? The tenative start date would be early June, and classes would be held at the Triangle Dance Studio on Miami Blvd. just off I-40.

Open Hafla 3/27 in Durham

Evening!

Just wanted to let everybody know, that the Durham chapter of the SCA (the Canton of Buckston-on-Eno) is holding our monthly hafla tomorrow night. Free! There will be live drums (I'm the teacher) and we do have a dance 'teacher' although she's more of a coach. Very informal, very open format. No formalized recitals. Just jammin' & having a good time. We do this the fourth Tuesday of every month.
Our SCA business meeting is at 7.30, and we usually start the hafla at 8pm, and end about 9pm. All are welcome! We're at the Pilgrim United Church of Christ at 3011 Academy Road just off of Hwy 751 in Durham. If you have questions, please feel free to contact me, or look up -

Today at my Earth Fare class I was interviewed by a reporter for UNC's
radio station regarding my class, tribal belly dance and belly dance in
general. The reporter also interviewed one of my students to get her
perspective on these topics. If you live in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro
area, you can hear the show live on the air this Saturday, November 18
at 8:30am on WCHL 1360 AM. If you miss it live (I can't imagine why!),
it will be up on the web by Monday at

I'm not sure how long the piece will be, but it was great to have the
opportunity to spread the word about our beautiful art form!

New session of beginner classes at Earth Fare starting Nov. 9

Blue Moon Dance Company presents a new session of beginner tribal
belly dance classes starting this Thursday, November 9 at Earth Fare
in Chapel Hill, 1:00 - 2:15 PM in the Community Room. Please note
that this session will run Nov. 9, 16, Dec. 7, 14, and 21 (no class
on Nov. 23 nor 30).

Beginner classes are presented in a Tribal Fusion Style format which
teaches group improvisation, how to "lead and follow", chorus
formations, cues and transitions, how to play zils (finger cymbals)
and elements of basic choreography. A new series of moves is taught
during each session. During this coming session we will be focusing
on formations, dancing with a partner, circle dancing, and the basics
of costuming for tribal dance as well as introducing some new moves
and combinations.

Drop-ins are welcome for this class! Zils and hip scarves are
available to borrow or purchase. Students should wear comfortable
clothing, and are encouraged to wear light socks, dance shoes or bare
feet during class. Ages 18 and up. A minimum of 5 students is
required in order to run the class.

pricing help

Hello all....

I need help with some pricing. I have been contacted for a couple different private functions, (girls night in, birthday parties, ect) and am trying to figure out what to charge. Does anyone have an idea of what the "going rate" is for this area? Any tips on how to calculate a price? I need to come up with a couple different scenarios. For example: (1)performance and some audience participation..approx 30 min. (2) about 45-50 min teaching and a brief performance.

Do you charge per hour?

Any info would be helpful.
